The National Gendarmerie is a French armed force under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas Territories, and the Ministry of the Armed Forces with regard to its participation in military operations.
It is responsible for security in rural and suburban areas.
As the successor to the Maréchaussée, the National Gendarmerie is one of France’s oldest institutions. Although it has been under the Ministry of the Interior since 2009, it retains its military status and culture, remaining dedicated to serving the public.
The National Gendarmerie comprises more than 130,000 military personnel and over 300 different roles: dog handler, protection of national palaces, GIGN—there might just be one for you!
