Description

This hike allows you to enjoy the various panoramic views from the ridges of Mount Vouan overlooking the Voirons, Salève, and Môle mountains.

Mount Vouan, a small mountain range rising to 978 meters, was once crossed by a smugglers’ trail. The smugglers would bring wheat from the Pont Morand Mill to Geneva and, on their return, bring back alcohol, tobacco, and other goods... Historically, this was a quarry for millstones, which were used to grind rye, barley, and other grains into flour. With a one-metric-ton millstone, several hundred kilograms of flour could be produced each day.

The Mount Vouan millstone quarry was of extreme importance because it was one of the largest in southeastern France, producing more than 200,000 millstones across 72 quarries. Today you can still see large round holes in the rock, nearly 2 meters high. They are part of the former Vachat and Grand’Gueule quarries, which have been designated as “Historic Monument” since 2009 and “Sensitive Natural Area” since 2017.
